SMART PITAYA PROJECT

Synergy between agriculture & technology

What we grow

We are Pitayeros

(it’s Spanish for pitaya growers + enthusiasts)

Our pitaya project identifies and delivers three consumer expectations:
Sensory sensation: A feast for the eyes and tastebuds, the pitaya’s vibrant skin peels easily to reveal a refreshing sweetness of kiwi meets pear.
Superfood power: Low calorie, high fibre and rich in vitamins, minerals, prebiotics and antioxidants.
Fresh and naturally ripe: Our pitayas continue the tradition of Spanish cuisine that is highly valued for its fresh naturally ripened ingredients.

Why it matters

Faster = fresher: Compared to extra-EU imports, the shorter journey from Spanish plantation to EU and UK retailers favours cold chain management of naturally ripened fruit. This means our pitayas look fresher, taste better and retain their health benefits for longer.

How we grow

We are EU certified organic farmers

Our sustainable strategies focus on organic farming methods and water management, such as:
Integrating new crops within old olive groves: Pitaya is a cactus plant that occupies little space, thrives on natural nutrition and tolerates drought.
Hosting beehives and conserving native flora: This in turn promotes healthy humid soil and attracts natural pollinators and pest predators.

Why it matters

EU organic certification: Our third-party organic production certification is a quality guarantee for the EU and UK markets.
Increasing climate change resilience: By securing food production and mitigating risks of water scarcity and soil degradation.
Protecting habitats and biodiversity: By conserving ancient olive groves, native flora and the soil microbiology below.

Who we are

We are technological innovators with green thumbs

Abitar’s founders are Madrileños–or Madrid inhabitants–who’ve returned to their famillies’ Andalusian agricultural roots for the smart pitaya project.
Today, our international interdisciplinary team explores agri-tech innovations to improve sustainability, diversify our products and services and engage more widely with EU trade partners.

Why it matters

Multilingual customer service: Our international team can arrange Europe-wide deliveries and respond to issues in English, German or Spanish.
IT know-how: Our IT team assures secure communications, delivery tracking and data management.
Future innovations: The pitaya project proceeds contribute to our ongoing exploration of smart agriculture to combat climate change impacts.

Where we are

Gateway to the Mediterranean ‘garden of the world’

Our greenhouses are nestled among olive groves around white villages of the rugged mountainous region of Axarquía in Andalusia, Spain–the gateway where the Mediterranean ‘garden of the world’ meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Why it matters

Proximity economy advantage: Beside extra-EU imports, inter-Europe and UK freight reduces time, distance, costs and carbon footprint.

Stable rural communities: Pitayas direct from the growers supports fair salaries, good working conditions and new learning prospects. This helps arrest Spain’s rural exodus and keeps small Mediterranean villages on the map.
